Summer attendees will celebrate with NASA during Space Science Week

Read the history of Florida Prep and it quickly becomes clear that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Kennedy Space Center are featured prominently. In fact, our school was opened in 1961 to accommodate the children of the many scientists and contractors flooding into Brevard County for the lunar landing program.

In its first three years from 1961 to 1964, the program grew over 500% and involved some 34,000 NASA personnel and 375,000 employees of associated industrial and university contractors. School space was limited and Florida Air Academy, as Florida Prep was known at the time, soon grew into a desirable choice for students from around the world.

Florida Prep’s location, only 30 minutes’ drive from Kennedy Space Center, has allowed us to continue this association. Over the years we have been privileged to view up close the progress in Space exploration, and its associated technologies. Indeed, many of our families, both past and present, continue to be intransigently linked to the space program and space exploration.

We are therefore delighted to continue that exploration spirit with our Space Science Week during our Summer Program from July 22 – July 26.*

The week is part of a nationwide celebration for the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing, during which the iconic words “That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”, became synonymous with astronaut Neil Armstrong as he became the first man to step onto the Moon on July 20, 1969, and the subsequent safe return to earth of the Apollo 11 crew on July 24, 1969.

Summer attendees at Florida Prep will be researching Space Science and technologies, conducting experiments and delving into the industry itself.

We will also be visiting the Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday, July 24, where we will join attendees from around the world in celebrating the safe return to Earth of the Apollo 11 crew, 50 years prior.

Enrollment is now open for students to join us for this exciting program; however, spaces are limited and are filling up fast.

Be at the heart of space exploration on Florida’s Space Coast. Join the Florida Prep Summer Program!
