Florida Prep’s Performing Arts program is more than just a creative outlet; it’s a transformative experience that brings with it a wealth of benefits across a wide range of experiences.
One of the standout advantages of joining the program is the strong sense of camaraderie it fosters among participants. Whether the students are aspiring actors, singers, or dancers, they quickly learn that they are part of a tight-knit community that shares a passion for the arts, and though Florida Prep students are from many different countries, those with English as a second language often play pivotal roles in Florida Prep productions.
The benefit of performance also enhances our students’ growth; those choosing to perform develop invaluable public speaking skills. The stage becomes their training ground, where they learn to project their voices, articulate their lines clearly, and confidently perform in front of an audience.
This skill is not only vital for successful stage performances but is also a valuable life skill; a recent Gallup poll confirmed that the greatest fear of 40% of Americans is public speaking!
Beyond the acting, singing, and dancing, those Florida Prep students preferring to remain behind the scenes are offered the opportunity to embrace new skillsets such as costume design, set design, and audiovisual expertise.
These behind-the-scenes roles are crucial to bringing a production to life, and students can discover hidden talents and passions they might not have explored otherwise.
Inspiration and tuition of a different kind is also afforded to students as they visit the theatres located close to Florida Prep. From professional theatre groups to hometown performances, each visit allows our students to view and compare the many different production styles and delivery by the actors.
This multi-discipline approach to the Performing Arts under the tutorage of Ms. Judy Smith; a highly qualified faculty member, with a former successful career in theatre management, encourages students to widen their perspective by diving into the numerous roles available within the production company.
Recently, Ms. Smith directed an innovative and interactive production “You, the Jury”. In this unique performance, students were
encouraged to adlib, improvise, and interact with the audience.
Not only did this encourage creativity and quick thinking, but it also added an exciting element of unpredictability to the performance.
Such experiences allow Florida Prep students to push their artistic boundaries, and practice thinking on their feet.
Florida Prep’s Performing Arts company is not just about putting on a show, it’s about personal growth, collaboration, and exploration. It’s a space where creativity knows no bounds and the journey is just as rewarding as the performance.
